Hey I am a college student and I just inherited my fathers laptop. I intend to do something with this laptop regarding which I need some guidance. Please tell me exactly how can I upgrade a MACBOOK PRO into a Seagate Momentus XT drive?
Follow the normal precautionary measures of grounding, removing the battery, etc. The process assumes that you already have Mountain lion 10.8.x. and a 8Gb USB drive with Mountain lion on it.
Now go on with following the under given steps in the orderly manner.
- Once you repair permissions on the current drive you should make a backup on the third drive using any backup software that suits you best.
- If you do not have it, then create and 8Gb USB drive with Mountain Lion .
- Place your current drive into an enclosure after removal. Try Firewire, Thunderbolt or USB.
- Start installing the new hybrid drive in your computer system.
- Boot your system with the 8Gb USB drive with the mountain lion.
- Open disk utility, and select new hard drive in the left side panel. Now click the Partition Tab. Select (1 partition) from the layout drop down menu and in the options at the bottom make sure GUID Partition Table is selected. Now you can run drive verify and drive repair. Everything should be fine and if so, you can quit disk utility.
- Now it is best to install a fresh copy of OS. Although you can restore from the backup. But it is highly recommended to start things with Fresh OS. Once you restart try making a new user account so, that you can download and update on the new OS.
- Once the updates are in place you have got yourself a clean Operating system. Now go to the finder and try repairing permissions. Try bringing the old account onto the new hard drive by using Migration tool in the utilities.
- Re-run disk utility to repair permissions after restarting the system.
After following these steps everything works fine.
