What do you do when a power surge destroys your hard drive and you loose hundreds

when I try to copy large files from internal drive to my 3TB Mac. When I connect it, it works perfectly but after coping large files I get a message like “You must restart windows to get USB working again”. What I have to do to get rid of the problem. Although my external drive is new but still I face the problem, what can be the solution? Any suggestion will be appreciated.
